Collections
Collections of special mention include those of Orchids, Begonia, Kowhai, Metrosideros, Camellia, Native shrubs and trees, Flaxes, Palms, Eucalypts and Succulents. The Orchid Collection exhibits one of the widest variety of orchids found in any New Zealand public garden.
Collectors and botanic and horticulture specialists in a variety of areas support the Bason in many ways. Its Patron Vonnie Cave, photographer and author, camellia and succulent specialist, shares effort, knowledge and enthusiasm and donates plants from her own extensive 'Seafield' garden to help maintain the high standard and variety of the Bason. Clive Higgie, with his wife Nicky, of 'Paloma Gardens', a Garden of National Significance' specialising in cycads, palms and sub tropical plantings and landscaping, gives support in the Bason plantings especially in the Millennium Hill area.
Associated groups, such as the Camellia, Rose, Daffodil, Horticulture, Herb, Botanical, Begonia and Heritage Societies have, from the Gardens inception, played an important part in its development. Others like the Orchid Society also work together on annual events such as the Orchid Show.
